An owner can safely verify the model number from the spacer bar and photograph the frame condition for our review. What goes wrong fast: impact-rated units weigh 8-12 pounds per square foot, a 36-by-72 Winguard single-hung exceeds 200 pounds, and improper lifting technique cracks the corner gussets before the unit reaches the opening. Second, PGT’s HVHZ installation requires specific anchor spacing and torque values; a missed anchor or overdriven fastener voids the impact certification and the product warranty.

We don’t recommend owner installation for any impact-rated window. For non-impact EnergyVue in a ground-floor frame with intact anchoring, an experienced DIYer with a helper and proper suction cups can manage; we still recommend our measured survey first because “close enough” on a rough opening becomes a leak in the first storm.
